Capybara Enclosure at Suffolk Rural College

Chapelstone Zoo Construction were tasked with providing a new habitat with Pond and Fencing

Working with Sarah Jay, Projects Co-ordinator at the college, we designed and constructed a safe, enriching outdoor enclosure for a small group of capybaras.

The work included the design and build of a new shelter, refurbishment of a swimming pond, suitable fencing and landscaping.

The Capybaras now have gradual sloped entry and exit at multiple points. The college requested 1.2 metre high fencing, with wire mesh attached to round wooden posts with a top rail. The fencing was buried below ground and we integrated ‘burrowing prevention’, by extending a 30cm apron outwards from the enclosure, to deter even the most determined digger!

The shelter itself has a treated wood frame with a decked roof and onduline roof sheets.
